Meditation posture is not a one-size-fits-all. In Zen, traditionally we sit on the floor with crossed legs or in lotus. We use a cushion called a zafu or a small bench designed specifically for meditaiton. Some prefer eyes slightly open, gazing down. Others prefer closed eyes. Westerners are often uncomfortable seated on the floor for long periods of time. If discomfort in the knees arises there are various options, including sitting in a chair. The most important thing is to feel stable and alert. Regardless of which position your legs are in, it's important to maintain an erect spine. Lying down or slouching sends a message to the body to sleep, so sitting upright is usually more effective for concentrated, alert meditation.
